Your Bucket List

I cannot take credit for the following piece, but I found it on one of my favorite blogs and thought it would be interesting to hear back from our readers.

The movie "The Bucket List" follows two terminally ill men (played by Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman) who embark on a journey with a wish list of things to do before they “kick the bucket.” Here’s our equestrian version of a bucket list—25 ultimate things to experience in a lifetime as a horse lover.

What's on your equestrian bucket list?

1. Gallop along the beach.
2. Win a blue ribbon, even if it’s for the egg and spoon race!
3. Enjoy an evening of equestrian theater, from major touring productions such as Cavalia to local performance troupes.
4. Try your hand at cattle work. Find out what it means when they say a horse is “cowy.”
5. Jump! From crossrails to cross-country obstacles, experience the thrill of soaring over fences.
6. Fall off and get right back on again. Conquering fear is empowering.
7. See the majestic white Lipizzan stallions of the Spanish Riding School.
8. Come to a sliding stop on a well-trained reining horse.
9. Take a lesson with your equestrian idol, _________ (you fill in the blank.)
10. Nurse a horse through a crisis and back to full health.
11. Experience the smooth ride of a gaited horse.
12. Watch the horses come through the Head of the Lake on cross-country day at the Rolex Three-Day Event.
13. Have the courage to do the right thing for your horse, even when it’s not easy.
14. Attend the Kentucky Derby dressed to the nines—including hat!
15. Tackle a trail accessible only by horseback and enjoy the view.
16. Take your dream vacation on horseback.
17. Master the sitting trot.
18. Ride a fine-tuned horse in your discipline of choice, be it dressage schoolmaster or barrel champ.
19. Watch polo. Even better, try your hand at it!
20. Feed, muck, groom, ride. Repeat daily.
21. Wake up to a whinny every morning.
22. Fly down the track on a Thoroughbred.
23. Meet one of your favorite famous horses in person.
24. Ride bareback, bridleless ... or both!
25. Share a bond with your horse that’s deeper than words.

Which ones have you already done? Which ones would you love to do? And what's on your personal bucket list that isn't listed above?

I'll post my answers tomorrow! :-)

  1. I actually liked this list as is - and have to say, it brought back so many wonderful memories...

    1. Done it
    2. Done it
    3. Took my daughter to Cavalia - it was the best show I've ever been too - magical
    5. Done it
    6. Done it -- too many times to count!
    11. After riding nothing but cow horses and own own Appy, I got the chance to ride a Tenn Walker - the difference was indescribable!
    15. Done it - and rode 1 week on the Oregon Trail
    17. Does riding the trot bareback count? :D
    20. Done it - sadly not currently though
    21. Again - wish I could
    23. Although I haven't done this, I did get to be with my daughter when she met hers
    24. Yep, done it
25-although I never had the bond with my horse that I read about in "The Black Stallion" or books like that, there was something special my relationship with "Shanandoah" Some days I would come to the paddock feeling the weight of the world on my shoulders. She would come up to me, drop her big ol' ugly appy head into my chest and give me what I can only describe as a horse hug. We would stand there, leaning on each other like that for ages, and I always felt better after words...

Thank you for reminding me of all of this :D

  2. I must say I'm pretty proud of myself. I've done all but six of those. I think we should add go on a fox hunt in Ireland. I've seen footage of it and it seems so exhilarating. That is definitely on my bucket list as well as play polo in Argentina!

Horses saved my life and I owe everything to them! Ironically, I saved two horses from slaughter, so it's a complete circle!
