Slaughterbound Horses

This post is going to be a short one because I need to finish preparing my horse trailer for a big day tomorrow.

Accompanied by my good friend Liz, I will be hitting the road around 5:30am to go to a well-known livestock auction in New Jersey. There, we will be picking up five horses who have all found homes in just the nick of time. What's the rush? They were all scheduled to be sent to a slaughterhouse in Canada at 9pm tomorrow evening. I'll pause while we listen to those collective hearts break...

Of the five we're hauling, two are being delivered to a farm in Connecticut. They consist an aged Saddlebred gelding with leg problems and a 24+ year old Standardbred ex-racehorse who won over $300k on the track. Nice retirement, huh?

Two more are scheduled for a layover at our farm until they are both picked up by their new owners. The first is a Saddlebred going to a farm in Vermont, and the other is a Standardbred is heading to a foster home just south of Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire.

The last one? She's the one pictured at the top. She's a 13.3 hand pony mare, just 4 years old. She'll be coming to our place...

The new pony mare we're getting will need a name. I like naming my horses after songs - any suggestions?!

I will be on the road for about 10 hours tomorrow and probably won't post again until Monday morning. Keep your fingers crossed for us that everything goes smoothly tomorrow!

  1. How about Sara Smiles? When she finds out where she is landing, she will be smiling! Good luck and be safe.

  2. Nicki -- because you are saving her just in the nick of time.

  3. Looked at the Billboard top 100 and came up with a few song titles that might work as horsey names :)

-Fireflies (could be changes to Firefly)
    -Sweet Dreams (Dream for short?)

After looking at the top 50, I gave up. All the titles are very... explict.

Anyways... it is that time of year! It is the holiday season! Why not name her after a reindeer? Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, Rudolph? ( I had to sing to myself to remmber all fo the names! lol)

Whatver you decide on, have fun with her! She looks like a love bug and just wants someone to spoil her ;) She should be a fun one!

Oh, and thank you so much for everything you do, you are truely an amazing person! You do so much for these magnificent animals, it is just remarkable. Thank you.

  4. Skittles? Doodle? or you could just go with Lucky? or maybe Lucy since you have Linus (: or Peppermint Patty!!

  5. Four year old with no major health problems, trained at least to wear a saddle, selling for meat prices? Yeah. Unless your youngsters are selling for $10,000+, it's time to stop breeding for a few years.

I'm working at the local mall this season, so I have Christmas music on the brain. How about Bell(e)? Jingle bells, auction's hell, Julie bought a horse... Or maybe Holly, as in the holly and the ivy?

    How's Stewie settling in?

  6. Save travels....please post as soon as you can so we know you made it home safe and sound.

  7. You are wonderful Julie, helping to get these horses into safe homes for the Holidays!
An Old BO of mine also named all of her horses after songs. Look back at some of the music from the 50-60-70's era and you will find plenty of names to pick from.

  8. She is a doll! My favorite song as a young girl (I'm really telling my age here) was Wildfire by Michael Martin Murphey, I think around 1975...does anyone remember it....anyway, I've always wanted a pony named Wildfire.....

  9. god bless you julie / dan ;];];]may your guardian angels be with you every mile !!

  10. right now I'm listening to a song called Scarlet by Brooke Fraser. it's so beautiful.
    I think that's a beautiful name. Scarlet. :)

  11. Best of luck with your travels!! I'm sending a small donation to help with gas money. I saved my girl from an auction a year and a half ago and couldn't imagine what would have happened to her if she would have ended up in the truck like so many others! Happy Holidays!

  12. You could name her after the Beetle's song Dizzy Miss Lizzy...Dizzy or Lizzy or I guess Missy for short. Or Pepper's Lonely Heart...Pepper for short

  13. She looks like shen is in need of some love.

    My Wish....Rascal Flatts
    Angel...Concrete Angel (Martina McBride)

  14. She looks like a "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" to me. Dunno why. She just does...

    Lucy for short, of course!

  15. Wow, what a sweet looking little mare. Hmmmm, song names, eh?

Lola; your choice of the Barry Manilow version or the one by the Kinks.

    Sally; as in Mustang Sally.

Penny Lane; Beatles. For some reason I always picture a bright chestnut with that name though.

    Georgia; Georgia on My Mind.

And, because I LOVE, love, love The Flight of the Conchords: Carol Brown.

As others have already voiced-thank you so much for all you do for these horses and ponies, it is truly remarkable.

  16. Hmmmm...Just In Time (Jule Styne) And call her Justine for short?

  17. Noel.
Or Carol, like for Christmas carol.

"I'm No Angel" (a Dido song - you could call her "Ima" or "Angel"). It also would have the dual meaning that she didn't go to the slaughterhouse. Just look at that star.

    Or, "Little Star" by Madonna.
... "Never forget who you are / little star / never forget how to dream / butterfly. May the angels protect you / and sadness forget you / little star. There's no reason to weep / lay your head down to sleep / little star. May goodness surround you / my love I have found you / little star."
I like that for a pony!

  18. o my gosh!!! she is sooo cute!

  19. maybe Holly Hope, holly Knight, Kight of hope

  20. China Rose - Enya song
La Vida Loca - Ricky Martin
    Electropop -Jupiter Rising
    Amaranth - nightwish
    Briar - Nimah
    Valencia- deathcab for cutie
    Midnight Blue - Enya
    Skyway- we the kings
    Skyward Bound
    Calabria - Enur
i think she just looks like a Calabria
    good luck!!!
